Along with Prague, the North Bohemia region, especially Teplice, was a leading centre of the opposition community known by the later appellation of underground. The non-conformist community soon found itself in conflict with the communist regime. A period characterised as a breeding ground of the underground (a proto-underground) began in 1965; twenty years later, in 1985, there was a revival of the underground movement following the harsh repression of the early 1980s.

Ladislav Kudrna is a historian at the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes.
