1993

Elected first President of the Czech Republic on January 26.

1996

On January 27, Olga Havlova died. In December, the President underwent lung-removal operation after a small growth was diagnosed as cancerous.

1997

Married Dagmar Veskrnova, a popular and acclaimed Czech theatrical, television and movie actress, on January 4.

1998

Elected President of the Czech Republic on January 20.

1999

 He enabled the entry of the Czech Republic into the North Atlantic Treat Organisation (NATO).

1999

 The Torst publishing house published a seven-volume set containing the complete works of Václav Havel.

2002

 The radio broadcast of “News to Cuba”, in which he criticised the communist regime in that country
2nd February 2003 his term of office as president ended.
July 2003 The president of the USA awarded him the “President’s Medal of Freedom”.
