In 2003 a conference was held on 2 October at the Prague Crossroads. It was entitled "Civic Society: Freedom is Not to Be Taken for Granted" and was organised in honour of Ales Bialiatski, a Belarusian dissent and writer who has been in prison since 2011 for alleged tax evasion. Ales Bialiatski was represented at the conference by his wife, Natalia Pinchuk.
